The GACE Science 6 to 12 assessment is designed for educators seeking secondary science certification in Georgia. The exam measures both science content knowledge and scientific reasoning skills.
Test Structure
With the transition to the new format, candidates may take the tests separately or during the same testing session. There's physical science, life science, Earth and space science, or you may take all three at once. This new option makes it easier for candidates to focus on one area, if that's the only area they seek certification in. The previous version required candidates to take one test that included content on all subjects areas of science 6-12. You are provided with reference materials during the test: periodic table, scientific calculator, and formulas.
Question Format
Most questions are multiple choice and focus on:
scientific inquiry
data analysis
graph interpretation
lab design
classroom science scenarios
real world application of science concepts
Main Content Areas (Testlets)
The exam covers major science disciplines:
Physical Science
Life Science
Earth and Space Science
Scientific inquiry and experimental reasoning are emphasized throughout the assessment.
Timing
Each testlet can be taken separately. However, if you choose to take all three at once, test takers are allowed a maximum of 2 hours and 30 mins.
Physical Science (60 mins)
Life Science (45 mins)
Earth and Space Science (45 mins)
Scoring
Scores are reported on a scaled system. A passing score for many GACE exams is typically 220.
What Makes the Exam Challenging?
The assessment focuses less on memorization and more on:
applying scientific concepts
analyzing investigations
interpreting scientific data
thinking like a science educator
Preparation Tips
Successful preparation often includes:
reviewing middle and high school science standards
practicing data and graph analysis
studying lab procedures and inquiry skills
completing timed practice questions
strengthening physics and chemistry problem solving skills
